Chiropractic is a branch of the healing arts that uses natural methods to accomplish its goals. Doctors of Chiropractic focus
on the fact that everything in the body has a nerve supply which, along with the brain, controls the function and movements of everything
we do. When that nerve supply is interrupted, malfunction occurs. This can lead to pain, muscular weakness, sensory deficits,
such as loss of sensation or numbness, or even disease.
Nerve irritation or impingement most often occurs where the nerves leave
the spinal column. When two adjacent vertebrae become misaligned with each other, the openings where the nerves leave the spine
may become compromised and thereby affect the nerve as it leaves the spinal column.
In more serious conditions, misalignments
that have existed over a long period of time may actually alter the shape and size of the vertebrae or the discs, ligaments or
muscles attached to the spine. If the disc is weakened enough, it may rupture and cause nerve pain or loss of muscle use.
This is known as a herniated disc. When that occurs, surgery is often required. A chiropractor can best treat such a condition
in its early stages. It is for this reason that it is very important to have a condition assessed when the symptoms first arise.
